Can You Solve It? The Forgotten Dutch Invention Which Forged our Contemporary Globe
There are many candidates to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 sawyers working over three months,” notes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this speedy automated saw, which turned logs to planks using almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct ships more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch naval, economic as well as artistic dominance in the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component transformed the rotary motion into vertical motion for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral motion feeding the log to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward one precise increment each cycle.
“Each element was simple on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so they operated within a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every downward motion and moving on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of fundamental components.”

Construct a mechanism which converts rotary movement into vertical motion. You have these items only: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two rods. A “sleeve”, that is a tube or housing into which one of the bars can slide snugly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a stand, so that the parts do not fall down.)
