Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
