Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the ability to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
